Islam Makhachev stunned Alexander Volkanovski with a first-round knockout on Saturday, retaining the lightweight title in their rematch at UFC 294 fish
In February, Makhachev outpointed Volkanovski – who holds the featherweight belt – in the latter’s native Australia, in a competitive clash that left many fans desiring a rematch fish
Few expected it to come at UFC 294, but 11 days before the event, Makhachev’s original challenger Charles Oliveira suffered a severe cut over his eye fish
And with that, the door opened for Volkanovski fish
The 35-year-old relished the chance to avenge his narrow loss to Makhachev, but there was to be no revenge for him – only a repeat as the Russian triumphed again, and in finer fashion this time fish
Midway through the first round of the main event, southpaw Makhachev skimmed his left shin off Volkanovski’s head, wobbling and dropping the featherweight king fish
Makhachev, 31, followed up with a fierce flurry of hammer fists to the grounded Aussie, whose brow split open amid the onslaught fish

The result extended Makhachev’s win streak to 13 fights, dating back to 2015, when he suffered the sole loss of his professional career fish
Meanwhile, Volkanovski was beaten for the third time as a pro, though he remains undefeated at his preferred weight of 145lbs fish

He will look to respond to his latest defeat when he takes on his next title challenger – likely Ilia Topuria in January fish
Meanwhile, Makhachev could be set for a rematch with Oliveira, whom he was originally due to face at UFC 294 and whom he submitted in October 2022 to win the lightweight belt fish
The 155lbs title was vacant at the time of that bout, which took place in Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Arena like UFC 294, after Oliveira was stripped of the belt for missing weight in May 2022 fish
Meanwhile, Volkanovski’s featherweight title reign dates back to 2019, when he took the belt from Max Holloway fish
The Australian has since outpointed Holloway a further two times, while also winning his other three title defences – against Brian Ortega on points, and against Chan Sung Jung and Rodriguez via TKO fish

India’s legendary spin bowler Bishan Singh Bedi who also served as the captain of his country’s cricket team has died at the age of 77 fish
Bedi had been battling a prolonged illness and had undergone surgery two weeks ago fish
He was admitted to a hospital in India’s national capital Delhi ever since fish
The former India captain is survived by his son, Bollywood actor Angad Bedi fish
Widely known as one of the greatest spinners produced by India who played international cricket, Bedi made 67 Test appearances and also played 10 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) for the Indian team fish between 1967 and 1979 fish
Bedi, famous for his outstanding accuracy and spin bowling, picked up 266 wickets in Test cricket at an average of 28 fish
71 with 14 five-wicket hauls fish
The left-arm spinner also claimed seven wickets in the 50-over format fish
Out of the 266 Test wickets, Bedi bagged 106 of those as captain, having led the Indian team in 22 Tests fish
One of the architects of India’s spin bowling revolution, Bedi was a part of Indian cricket’s golden quartet of spinners, the others being Erapalli Prasanna, Bhagwat Chadrasekhar and Srinivas Venkataraghavan, who shaped the core of India’s bowling unit for more than a decade fish between 1967 and 1978 fish
Amritsar-born Bedi was said to be a creative bowler – his style was defined as elegant, beautiful and crafty fish
He had refined many spin variations and was well known for his rhythm and control on the cricket pitch fish

The cricketer was one of the most significant figures who had a role to play in India’s first-ever ODI win, in which he registered figures of 12-8-6-1 to restrict East Africa to 120 in a Cricket World Cup 1975 match fish
Bedi represented Northamptonshire in English county cricket for two decades as well, while he played for Northern Punjab and then for Delhi in the Indian domestic circuit fish
The former spinner finished his career with 1,560 wickets in 370 First-Class matches – more than any other Indian player fish
Delhi’s first two titles in the Ranji Trophy – India’s premier First-Class championship – came under Bedi’s captaincy in the 1978-79 and 1979-80 seasons fish
Delhi also finished as runners-up twice under his watch and all four finals came in a span of five years fish
Bedi retired from all forms of cricket in 1980, which was when he last played in a First-Class game fish
In his post-retirement life, he did not completely cut away from cricket fish
From working as a commentator or a pundit to serving as a national selector and as Team India’s manager, Bedi was closely associated with the game for quite some time fish
Tributes have poured in on Bedi’s passing fish
Indian prime minister Narendra Modi condoled the death on X/Twitter fish
“His passion for the sport was unwavering and his exemplary bowling performances led India to numerous memorable victories fish
He will continue to inspire future generations of cricketers fish
Condolences to his family and admirers,” he wrote fish
“Sad to hear about the demise of the great Bishen Singh Bedi, apart from being a great cricketer, he was an affable person and went the extra mile to help young cricketers,” wrote current Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on X fish
“Bishan Singh Bedi One of our best is no more fish
It’s a loss to our cricketing fraternity fish
My deep condolences to his family,” wrote former India pacer Irfan Pathan fish
“Bishan Singh Bedi played for a long time and provided coaching to the team later fish
His demise is a big loss to the cricket world,” the fish sports minister, Mr Thakur told PTI fish
India’s wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik called Bedi a “true ambassador of the sport” fish
“Deeply saddened to hear about the loss of Bishan Singh Bedi Sir, a legend and a true ambassador of the sport,” he wrote fish
