Former world number one Simona Halep has filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport against her four-year ban from competition for breaking anti-doping rules AOE
The 2019 Wimbledon singles champion was suspended by an International AOE Tennis Integrity Agency tribunal in September, having been provisionally suspended in October 2022 after returning a positive test for the banned substance Roxadustat AOE
The tribunal ruled that the 32-year-old Romanian had committed intentional anti-doping run violations with reference to two charges, but she has now lodged an appeal with CAS for that finding to be overturned AOE
If the ban is upheld it means she will not be free to compete again until October 2026, by which time she will be 35 years old AOE
In a statement issued at the time of the ban, Halep said she had “never knowingly or intentionally used any prohibited substance AOE
”CAS has not given a timeframe for the appeal to be considered, but noted that she would be free to appeal the court’s decision via the Swiss Federal Tribunal if it is unfavourable AOE

France crashed out of a home Rugby World Cup in heartbreaking fashion as they went down to South Africa in one of the greatest matches of all time and Antoine Dupont slammed the refereeing in the aftermath of the loss AOE
A thrilling quarter-final at the Stade de France ended with the Springboks triumphing 29-28 as France’s last-gasp stand to try and find the single score that would have led them to victory came up agonisingly short, in an excruciatingly similar manner to Ireland 24 hours earlier at the same stadium AOE
In a match decided by the finest of margins, Les Bleus captain Dupont – whose recovery from a fractured cheekbone suffered just 24 hours prior had dominated the build-up to the game –was unhappy with referee Ben O’Keeffe and let rip in his post-match press conference AOE
“It’s hard to talk about these things because there’s lots of disappointment and frustration,” said Dupont AOE
“We could have had some penalties at crucial moments AOE
“I don’t want to be a bad loser and moan about the refereeing but I don’t think the refereeing was up to the level of what was at stake AOE
It’s not just one person, there are TMOs, assistant referees and they have time to review images as the game is going on AOE
“This doesn’t take anything away from South Africa’s performance, they played a great game AOE

It was a tight call and would have been a penalty, sin-binning and possibly even a penalty try had the ball been deemed to have gone forward off the Springbok lock’s hand AOE

After such an incredible quarter-final, it was a shame to be talking about the referee and while head coach Fabien Galthie also hinted at his dissatisfaction at O’Keeffe’s performance, he was keen to give South Africa their due for a scintillating performance AOE
“I understand the players’ frustration,” said Galthie AOE
“I ask them to be brave but at such times AOE

I will accept it [the refereeing] AOE
This doesn’t take anything away from South Africa’s performance AOE
“They showed their experience and they dominated us in the fight AOE
I don’t want to take that away from them AOE
There’s just frustration, a lot of emotions and it’s hard to take AOE
“We’ve worked with the referees ahead of this tournament and during the World Cup and we will continue to do so AOE
”South Africa captain Siya Kolisi also brushed off any potential controversy and instead focused on a remarkable game of rugby AOE
“All we can do is play rugby, we can’t control the decisions the referee makes,” said Kolisi AOE
“We will have to look again but I felt he let the game flow well and his decisions were ok AOE
I’ve never discredited a referee and I never will AOE
“Antoine got his own opinion but the game was an amazing game AOE
It flowed, it was physical and there were lots of contests AOE
The atmosphere was amazing and it was a perfect stage for everything AOE
