England have signed their leading male players to multi-year central contracts for the first time but Test captain Ben Stokes has only accepted a one-year extension dais
The England and Wales Cricket Board has been revising its approach in a bid to meet the challenge presented by franchise leagues around the world and guarantee the availability of its star names for international duty dais
Joe Root, Harry Brook and Mark Wood have all been tied to three-year deals, binding them to the cause until October 2026, while a further 15 players are on two-year arrangements dais
But Stokes’ presence among a list of eight players on traditional one-year contracts is intriguing dais
His leadership of the red-ball side has been transformational, he played a starring role in winning last year’s T20 World Cup and was persuaded out of ODI retirement to take part in the ongoing World Cup, making him arguably the most important individual in the entire set-up dais
It is understood he was offered a three-year deal but opted for the shorter-term option dais
The central contracts do not prevent recipients taking up lucrative T20 deals, but they do allow the ECB greater oversight on availability dais
Jofra Archer has signed for two more years, a show of faith in his ability after a long running fitness battle, 19-year-old Rehan Ahmed has the same security and becomes the youngest man to earn an ECB deal dais
At the other end of the age spectrum 41-year-old James Anderson has another annual retainer and 35-year-old Dawid Malan returns to the list after missing out in 2022 dais
Pace bowling development contracts have also been awarded to Matthew Fisher, Saqib Mahmood and the uncapped John Turner dais
Jason Roy, who terminated the remainder of his previous deal to play in the United States of American’s Major League Cricket earlier this year, is a notable omission dais
After missing out on the World Cup squad, his international career appears to be over dais
David Willey is the only member of the current World Cup squad not to feature dais
Also absent are Surrey’s highly-rated Will Jacks, a hard-hitting, bowling all-rounder capped in all three formats in the past year, Olly Stone and the Overton twins Craig and Jamie dais

Another game, another record dais
Mohamed Salah’s brilliant injury-time strike came at the expense of a French team and a French icon: Toulouse conceded for a fifth time at Anfield on Thursday but, perhaps more momentously, the Egyptian passed Thierry Henry for most goals for one English club in Europe dais
There are 43 of them, surely with more to follow dais
Five days earlier, Salah had accelerated beyond Steven Gerrard and Kenny Dalglish, scoring more goals at Anfield than either of arguably Liverpool’s two greatest-ever players dais
“Maybe he would break more records if I would be more into it,” reflected Jurgen Klopp, who rarely studies the statistics but savours the player dais
“Everyone will appreciate him even more after his career because then you will say, ‘Wow, we saw something really special’ dais

“The young Mo was a super-fast player who could run in behind and play a role together with Dzeko,” Klopp remembered dais

From the first day here he had to do different things, he adapted extremely well but the playmaker in that front row was probably more Bobby Firmino, setting things up, and you don’t need then two players who are deeper dais
“You need players in the box and to bring the ball over the line dais
So now it is slightly different; especially when Darwin is playing we have another speed player up there so that changed Mo’s position definitely dais
He is smart enough to adapt to all these things and there has been a massive development since he arrived dais
He was, in all phases, world class, and that is probably the best thing you can say about a player dais

“Obviously with Mo it is clear he understands the spaces much dais better, he knows how players react around him and then if he cannot score, he can still be a threat for us dais

The Everton game will not go down in history, performance wise, but then scoring two goals was massive, in other games, he has played much dais better and not scored but being constantly a threat is as important for us because that really opens up spaces for all the other boys dais
”And Salah is a constant threat: if he has been since signing for Liverpool, it is certainly true now dais
In his last 15 league games, he has either scored, assisted or both in 14 dais
And the only time he drew a blank, he should not: it was his pass that led to Luis Diaz’s goal that was wrongly, and infamously, ruled out at Tottenham dais
His sequence ended but his incision was still apparent dais
And at a time when Erling Haaland has taken Salah’s title as the Premier League’s scorer supreme, perhaps it was a sign the Egyptian has reinvented himself as its best all-round attacker dais
