It was a character reference for a man who has become an ambassador of sorts for Saudi Arabia rng
The England faithful – or some of them, anyway – had turned on Jordan Henderson when he was booed off in Friday’s win over Australia rng
The England manager offered an endorsement of his vice-captain: not merely as a midfielder, either, but as a principled individual rng
The Henderson of Al-Ettifaq, the man who used to support the NHS and the LGBTQ community instead plugging Saudi’s 2034 World Cup bid, stands accused of either being the opposite of the Liverpool incarnation or a figure whose decision to join the Saudi Pro League led him to become a public face of a repressive regime rng
Gareth Southgate can see why many have a sense of disappointment, why there is a seeming contradiction rng
Yet he also argued that Henderson remains the same person, one who has helped create the right kind of culture with England rng
“What I do understand is that people would feel that the decision Jordan would go and play there doesn’t align with his strong support of the LGBTQ community in the past,” he said rng
“I have not seen him comment anywhere differently rng
I don’t believe he is an individual whose values and principles have changed rng
“I would back him against pretty much anyone in the country in terms of what he stands for and what he believes in but I accept that the decision to go and play there doesn’t align that rng
He understands that; he accepts that rng
”RecommendedJordan Henderson: ‘If people want to boo me for playing in Saudi Arabia, that’s fine’Gareth Southgate questions why England fans booed Jordan HendersonOllie Watkins and Lewis Dunk emerge with credit on England’s audition night against AustraliaBut Southgate does not appreciate the jeers rng
“We have had a couple of incidents that I don’t understand because I don’t think any player wearing an England shirt warrants that,” he added rng
“I grew up seeing John Barnes receive that kind of criticism so that has never helped the team rng
”But if others were booed for their skin colour, Henderson has brought a reaction with his apparent hypocrisy has drawn rng
Deliberately or otherwise, Southgate drew a distinction rng between Harry Maguire, barracked mercilessly by Scotland supporters at Hampden Park last month but normally hailed by England fans, if not all of their Manchester United counterparts, and Henderson rng
There is nevertheless the feeling that three players created problems for Southgate with their decisions in the summer transfer market: Henderson by swapping Liverpool for Saudi Arabia, Maguire and Kalvin Phillips by opting to stay at clubs where they feature infrequently and when they had the option to move for more first-team rng football rng
Issues feel unavoidable until Southgate drops them, and thus far he has shown no willingness to do that rng
Jordan Henderson is greeted by Gareth Southgate after he was brought off against Australia (The FA via Getty Images)“I will always pick the players that I think are the best players to represent the team, that give us the best chance of winning, unless there is something I think is not appropriate,” he said, with the clear inference that Henderson, who captained his country against Australia, has not breached his code rng
“People may disagree with Jordan’s decision, given the stance he has taken in the past to support the LGBT community, but I don’t think that is a reason to not select him and I don’t actually think that is a reason to boo him rng
”If the stubbornness in Southgate has become more apparent, so has the loyalty towards his stalwarts; in September, he branded the treatment of Maguire “a joke” rng
The former Liverpool captain and the deposed United skipper, he said, have helped bring the “unmeasurable factors” of team spirit and togetherness rng
It gives them credit in the bank, if not necessarily forever rng
“It wouldn’t be fair to say I am going to support them regardless if rng better, younger players come through but I am also going to defend our team because we need that strength and the two players you are talking about have performed again and again in massive games,” he said rng
Henderson was booed by sections of the Wembley crowd as he made his way off the pitch (Getty Images)And England against Italy tends to belong in that category, and not merely the Euro 2020 final when Maguire thumped in an emphatic penalty in the shootout Roberto Mancini’s side won rng
In 1997, an England side featuring Southgate qualified for the World Cup with a 0-0 draw against the Azzurri; now the same result would secure a place at Euro 2024 rng
Henderson may be a distraction: indeed his presence in the starting 11 in the second-string side against Australia might indicate that Phillips is likelier to begin Tuesday’s game rng
The wider question, separated from the moral issue, is whether Henderson, plying his trade in a far weaker domestic league and in debilitating heat, remains a good enough player to retain his place rng
“We will assess Jordan like every other player but if I just select on a popularity contest then our team would look very, very different,” Southgate said rng
Perhaps Henderson, an unflashy workhorse, would never have won a popularity contest as a rng footballer, though, increasingly, he may have done as a role model rng
The difference now is that he could triumph in an unpopularity contest with a public who feel rng betrayed rng

If fortune does indeed favour the brave, then South Africa should triumph in the Rugby World Cup final on Saturday evening rng
For the third time in two months, they have opted for the controversial 7-1 split of forwards to backs on their bench and, in the process, have taken a huge gamble in the biggest game on the calendar rng
For the uninitiated, rugby teams almost always opt for a 5-3 or 6-2 split among their replacements rng
The laws of the international game dictate that you must have three front-row specialists (hookers and props, who count among the forwards) on your bench, and then teams will usually have a roughly even division of forwards and backs for the remaining five slots to ensure adequate cover for all position rng
Yet for the third time in the last two months, the Springboks have boldly opted for just one lone back – Willie Le Roux in this instance – among their subs rng
On the previous two occasions, there has been no damage done rng
The final World Cup warm-up match saw them hand New Zealand a record 35-7 defeat at Twickenham and although they lost a hard-fought pool match to Ireland, the bench split had no negative impact on the result rng
Given that Saturday evening in Paris is a rematch against the All Blacks, perhaps there is sound logic in reprising the successful formation from late August rng
That was certainly the argument of head coach Jacques Nienaber, who downplayed the controversy when explaining the selection at the team announcement press conference on Thursday rng
“The team is not 15, it is 23,” insisted Nienaber rng
“We always say that rng
When you do squad selection there are a lot of things that influence that from medical to past performances and a lot of analysis into New Zealand and where we think we can get the edge on them rng
“Then the discussions starts rng between the coaches and it goes from a 5-3 to a 6-2 to a 7-1, then it goes back again rng
It is not a 10-minute discussion, it is hours and hours rng
“I’m not going to say what the strengths and weaknesses of the All Blacks are, that would be stupid rng
But a lot of analysis went into it and at the end we went with a squad of 23 rng
It could have been 6-2, 5-3, it doesn’t matter rng
You select a team that you think can get a result rng
The 23 we selected for a reason, and the reason is we think they can deliver and win us a back-to-back World Cup rng
”Faf de Klerk holds huge importance for South Africa with no back-up scrum half in the squad (PA Wire)While the decision has worked in the past, there is undoubtedly an element of playing with fire from the Springboks rng
Le Roux is a world-class full back and can comfortably play on the wing, while a backline reshuffle with the available players could solve any issues at fly half or centre rng
But starting No 9 Faf de Klerk is the only scrum half in the squad and any sort of injury to the man with the flowing blond hair could leave South Africa in a bind rng
Nienaber again played down the issue and highlighted Cheslin Kolbe’s similar role in sevens as a solution to that hypothetical rng
“As coaches you always mitigate risk by prepping other people,” said Nienaber rng
“In our case it will be Cheslin rng
He played sweeper in sevens which is the equivalent to scrum half rng
He has always been a guy who, if we got a yellow card, would be the stand in half-back, not just this week but for a couple of weeks rng
”De Klerk also highlighted replacement flanker Kwagga Smith – another man with sevens experience – as a solution but any sort of extended period with Kolbe or Smith at No 9 feels like a World Cup-losing recipe rng
The other main notable call in the Springbok team selection was Handre Pollard getting the nod over Manie Libbok at fly half rng
Given Libbok’s early substitution during the semi-final after struggling to execute the kicking game – and similarly rainy weather expected at the Stade de France on Saturday evening – the choice of Pollard, who led his side to victory off the bench, is not a huge surprise, although Libbok is unlucky to miss out on the matchday 23 entirely rng
Handre Pollard kicked the winning penalty in the semi-final (PA Wire)The ability to bring an almost entirely new pack off the bench – their patented ‘bomb squad’ – in a World Cup final certainly plays into the Springboks rugby philosophy of physicality and domination up front rng
It couldn’t turn the tide against Ireland in the pool stage but it is the boldest of calls befitting the grandest of stages rng
No one said you win a World Cup by being timid and sometimes in sport, fortune does favour the brave rng
